UNITED STATES 'ROSTAGE' 1961 Faux US 4c Stamps
Two plate number blocks of four created by cachet designer Alton A. Weigel to celebrate the rotationally symmetrical* numerals of the year date "1961" and to promote Al Boerger 's A.B.C. Covers and his own Artopages cachets. After originally inscribing the stamps "UNITED STATES POSTAGE", Weigel altered the stamps by pen by changing the "P" of postage to an "R" to make the inscription read "ROSTAGE". However, this was not sufficient to satisfy the Secret Service, who reportedly confiscated his remaining stock in July, 1961, saying they looked too much like United States stamps. *rotationally symmetrical: reads the same right-side-up or upside down
