The US Postal Service creates photos of essays in various formats to publicize the designs of upcoming stamp issues. Produced in advance of a stamp's issue, these are photos of artists' models, i.e., stamp production artwork, not photos of the stamps themselves. As such, these photos differ to some degree from the stamp as issued. Design changes can result in a variety of photos of essays for a given stamp issue. Produced in limited quntities and distributed primarily to the media, the vast majority photos of essays were destroyed after use and are no longer available to collectors.
