Greece - Forgeries of 1863 George I EssaysThe original engraved essay is thought to have appeared in 1863, around the time of the election of George I as King of the Hellenes by the Greek National Assembly. It depicts the King's effigy superimposed over a representation of the Acropolis. It is presumed that forgeries first appeared in the late 19th century as noted in Georges Chapier's "Les Timbres de Fantaisie" which was published in several volumes in the middle of the 20th century. But nothing seems to be known about the origin of either the essay or the forgeries.
